Only twenty-four of these victories were scored on the Western front, the rest coming on the Eastern front against Russia. In his career as a pilot, he was also shot down no less than eight times, being seriously injured in the final incident in 1944. Even before he reached his twenty-fifth birthday, he had been awarded with Oak Leaves to his Knights Cross.
